Lucie wins her first Premier title in Doha and moves up to #11
Lucie has had a fantastic week in Qatar, playing her best tennis day after day and coming through a tough draw. Unseeded, she took out Ekaterina Makarova, Andrea Petkovic and Carla Suarez Navarro before beating the former world no.1 Victoria Azarenka(6-4, 6,3) in the final.
Lucie got the opening break against Vika in the first set. Thanks to a very high performance on her serve (she hit 3 aces in a row and 7 in total), she raced to the victory. This is her first Premier-level title, the biggest of her career and the 6th title overall.
“I felt really good all week here and my performances were better and better, and I just wanted to use the opportunity to really go for it and take the title” Lucie said after the match. “I think I just really enjoyed it out there tonight, the atmosphere, the crowd – and just really went for every point.”
With this win, Lucie reaches a new career-high as No.11, one spot away from the top 10!
“I’m really excited and happy about this because it took me quite a few years to get to this point.I hope it’s not a finish point and I can still improve. My game improved a lot the last couple of years. I think me and my coach, Rob Steckley, have been doing a great job together. It’s just hard work and also maturing a little bit – I think it’s just everything coming together right now.”
