Fans Corner: “Lucie Safarova has a heart full of gold personality”
Fan Story shared by Indranil, USA
The first time I noticed Lucie was in 2010 when she was playing against Kim Clijsters in Australia and stuck with her baseline game. Initially I thought she was arrogant but I realized that she was shy and had a heart full of gold personality. The following year, when she beat Madison Keys at the US Open, I turned into a full time “Lucie Fan”! Since then I have been following a humble and genuine sports person.
I also saw her play at the Connecticut Open 2015. I was disappointed when she lost in the final against Petra but when she signed autographs for those kids, with her signature smile, it reflected her true sportsman spirit. That loss became so graceful, and that’s why we love her so much.
During the Rio Olympics I supported her in person, with a “go Lucieeeeeeeeeeee” slogan. The Czech Olympic Committee gave me one of my prize possessions: a “Czech Olympic pin”. I still remember each and every game with Bara, until they got their bronze medal. What a well-deserved achievement!
Another proud moment for me was at the 2016 US Open, when she won the tournament with Bethanie. I watched each and every game and cheered for her. After she won, she agreed to pose for a selfie with me – that was my WOW moment! She also offered my daughter her wristband and signed it.
The story never ends: this year I travelled to Prague to cheer on her during the FedCup tie. Now it has become a habit to watch her play, if possible in person. I hope that she will recover soon and I’m so proud to be a “Lucka fan”. Go Lucieeeeeee!
