Fans Corner: “Lucie Safarova treats the sport with love and passion”
I’m a person who has always loved athletes rated as “underdogs” against what we called the “elite” (top 10). I also was an avid fan of players from Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic): Martina Navratilova, Ivan Lendl and the serve and volley specialist Jana Novotna.
I saw Lucie for the first time in 2007, when she upset Mauresmo at the Australian Open. I have followed most of her matches online or on TV for the past 10 years and you can see no changes on how she approaches every match: with dedication, determination to win, and you can’t forget her smile.
When you watch her play, hitting that forehand rocketing from one side to the other, you can feel that tenacity on every shot. But I think that her love of the game is her most important personality trait and is above everyone else. She treats the sport with love and passion, and she enjoys it. Becoming a mega fan of Lucie for me is not just about winning every match but more about how she gives everything on the court.
I hope to meet her in person some day, with my daughter.
I wish her the best in 2017 and a Grand Slam victory in the future, not only in doubles but also in singles.
Edward (Philippines and UK)
